Stress Test
At POTS.net, we offer a range of advanced diagnostic tools, including stress tests, CPET and Stress Echo to assess your cardiovascular health and determine how your heart responds under stress.
Stress testing is essential for diagnosing various heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and heart failure. By evaluating your heart’s performance during physical exertion, we can create best treatment plans to improve your heart health and quality of life.
What is a Stress Test?
A stress test is a diagnostic tool that measures how your heart works during physical activity. During the test, you’ll typically walk on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike while being closely monitored. The test increases the workload on your heart, mimicking conditions where your heart needs more oxygen and nutrients, helping to reveal any issues with blood flow, heart rhythm, or lung function that may not be apparent at rest.
We offer various types of stress tests to provide the most comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation, each targeting specific aspects of your heart and lung performance.
What is the Purpose of Stress Tests?
- Diagnose Coronary Artery Disease: Coronary arteries are the primary vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. When these arteries are damaged or diseased—often due to cholesterol buildup or inflammation—coronary artery disease develops. A stress test helps identify this condition.
- Diagnose Heart Rhythm Problems: An abnormal heart rhythm, known as an arrhythmia, can cause the heart to beat too fast or too slow. A stress test can detect these irregular rhythms.
- Guide Heart Disorder Treatment: If you’ve already been diagnosed with a heart condition, a stress test helps your doctor evaluate whether your treatment is effective. It also provides valuable information to guide any changes in your treatment plan.
- Assess Heart Health Before Surgery: A stress test can determine if the heart is healthy enough to undergo surgeries like valve replacement or heart transplant, ensuring the procedure is as safe as possible.
What are the Different Types of Stress Tests?
- Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET): Measures how your heart, lungs, and muscles work together during exercise to evaluate your exercise capacity and diagnose conditions like heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
- Lexiscan Stress Testing: A pharmacological stress test for patients who cannot exercise. Lexiscan is injected to mimic the effects of exercise on the heart, allowing us to assess blood flow and detect potential blockages.
- Stress Echocardiography (Stress Echo): Combines stress testing with ultrasound imaging to visualize how your heart functions under stress, providing insight into potential heart muscle damage or reduced blood flow.

What Do Normal Stress Test Results Mean?
Normal stress test results indicate that your heart is functioning well under stress, with adequate blood flow and oxygen delivery during exercise. This usually means that your heart condition is stable, and no significant coronary artery blockages were detected.
What Happens if My Stress Test Results are Abnormal?
Abnormal stress test results could indicate a variety of issues, including restricted blood flow to the heart, heart rhythm abnormalities, or heart muscle damage. If your results are abnormal, we’ll discuss the next steps, which may include further testing, lifestyle changes, medications, or in some cases, procedures like angioplasty or stent placement. Our team will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your results.
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)
- Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) is a highly specialized test that measures how well your heart, lungs, and muscles work together during exercise. CPET is often considered the gold standard for evaluating exercise tolerance and can diagnose both heart and lung conditions, as well as determine the cause of unexplained shortness of breath.
What Happens During a CPET?
- You’ll wear a face mask to measure the oxygen you breathe in and the carbon dioxide you breathe out.
- You’ll walk on a treadmill or cycle on a stationary bike, with the intensity gradually increasing.
- We’ll measure your heart rate, oxygen consumption (VO2 max), and other variables to assess how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise.
- CPET is particularly useful for diagnosing unexplained fatigue, shortness of breath, and evaluating the severity of heart and lung conditions. It provides valuable data for managing heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases.
Is Cardiac Stress Testing Safe?
- Yes, cardiac stress testing is generally safe and is conducted under close medical supervision. The healthcare professionals at The Heartbeat Clinic are trained to monitor your heart and blood pressure throughout the test, ensuring your safety at every stage. While some people may experience temporary dizziness or fatigue, these symptoms usually resolve quickly after the test. In the rare event of complications, our team is fully prepared to respond immediately.

What Do Normal CPET Results Mean?
Normal Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) results show that your heart, lungs, and muscles are functioning well during physical activity, indicating no significant issues with oxygen delivery or exercise capacity.
What Happens if My CPET Results are Abnormal?
Abnormal Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) may indicate conditions such as heart or lung disease, poor exercise tolerance, or impaired muscle function. If your CPET results are abnormal, we’ll recommend further testing or treatments to address the underlying cause and work with you to improve your exercise capacity and overall health.
Lexiscan Stress Testing
- For patients who are unable to exercise due to physical limitations, we offer Lexiscan Stress Testing. This is a pharmacological stress test that uses a medication called Lexiscan (regadenoson) to simulate the effects of exercise on your heart.
What Happens During a Lexiscan Stress Testing?
- Lexiscan is injected into your bloodstream, causing your coronary arteries to dilate as they would during physical exercise.
- We monitor your heart's response to the medication, which can reveal blockages or reduced blood flow to the heart.
- This test is especially beneficial for patients with mobility issues or those who cannot tolerate traditional exercise-based stress tests. Lexiscan provides a safe and effective way to evaluate coronary artery function and detect potential issues with heart health.

Results and Next Procedure
What Do Normal Lexiscan Stress Test Results Mean?
Normal Lexiscan stress test results indicate that your heart has normal blood flow and there are no significant blockages in your coronary arteries. This suggests your heart is functioning well even under simulated stress.
What Happens if My Lexiscan Stress Test Results are Abnormal?
Abnormal Lexiscan stress test results could signal reduced blood flow to parts of the heart, which may indicate coronary artery disease or other heart conditions. Based on the results, we may recommend additional tests, lifestyle adjustments, medications, or procedures such as angioplasty or stent placement to improve blood flow and heart health.
Stress Echocardiography
- Stress Echocardiography, or Stress Echo, combines traditional stress testing with an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart). This test assesses how well your heart’s chambers and valves function under stress and evaluates your heart’s ability to pump blood.
- Stress Echo is excellent for detecting heart disease, valvular heart issues, and identifying regions of the heart that may not be receiving adequate blood flow. It is non-invasive and provides real-time images of your heart’s function during stress.
What Happens During a Stress Echocardiogram?
- A Stress Echo combines a traditional stress test with an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart). First, an echocardiogram is taken while you’re at rest to capture baseline images of your heart. Then, you’ll undergo either an exercise or Lexiscan-induced stress test. Once your heart is stressed, another echocardiogram is performed to capture images of your heart’s function under strain, helping detect any blood flow issues or heart muscle damage.

Not only was I able to get all of my testing done in one place, but I’ve also been able to get amazing referrals to outside specialists. This facility is thorough, reliable, and I didn’t feel like just a number. Each person took their time explaining each test, making sure I was comfortable, and felt seen, and heard!!! I’m also a private pay patient and was able to get so much testing done at a discounted rate! Not only do I have answers, but I’m now on a journey to feeling better! Thank you Dr. Suleman and each and every single one of his staff members!! Every single of one of you are absolutely exceptional!!! I appreciate each of you for helping me get my diagnosis’, and not just dismissing me like I have been for years!!Posted on Google ashley montgomeryApril 9, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr. Suleman and his crew at THBC have been a great help. I got very sick about 3 years ago and saw doctor after doctor only to be told I was "fine" and its "anxiety" and all my labs are "normal". I had suspected POTS for about a year but couldn't find a doctor who understands POTS or any dysautonomia/autoimmune anything. I finally found Dr. Suleman and he listened, then he gave me options, explained his reasons for each test he offered, then we started the testing, and not only have I got a POTS diagnosis and help from him on managing it in my every day life, I have also found out other issues that affect my POTS along the way. He does so many tests in office, and when I get results that suggest other things, I get my referrals to other doctors who specify in that issue, but are also familiar with Dr. Suleman and also POTS knowledgeable, cause we all know how POTS ties into EVERYTHING! He's worth the wait list to get in, and he's worth the long office visits and many tests because he gets you answers! Anyways, just wanted to say thank you to Dr. Suleman. Thank you for finding out what's wrong, and giving me answers and options to help me live a better life with this new diagnosis!Posted on Google Adoga HightowerJanuary 21, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been a patient of Dr. Suleiman’s since 2014. He is incredibly busy. A sign says please be patient. When it is your turn he will spend the time he needs to be thorough. POTS is such a complicated disease, it takes time to get a complete history from a patient, then select treatments. Very few cardiologists have the testing capacity his office has.He can do most tests in one place which is uncommon with other doctors who have to arrange all the testing required. He has gone out on limb for me several times. I was a pediatric nurse practitioner.I saw patients.I know how some patients have more concerns than others. Some are way sicker than othersAgain, this disease can cause many symptoms and it takes time to figure it out. Plus the associated illnesses with POTS may be hidden, and he finds them. He found all of it. Very generous. Does not smile often, but he is sincere. If I went to another cardiologist, very few know POTS, EDS, and MCAS, and they’d probably send me all over the place taking days, weeks of time. Dr.S can do it in 5 days. Sure, he isn’t the as outgoing as other doctors, but he knows his stuff. Very, very few doctors know POTS as well as he does. I know we want a diagnosis immediately, we want it taken care of, but it is a long term disease and requires time. I don’t know of such a comprehensive program in one place. Most hospitals do not know how to do a correct tilt table test for POTS.Posted on Google Kamie PorroDecember 13, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr. Suleman is amazing! He truly cares about his patients, is a POTS expert (one of the first and for many years the only POTS provider in the area), keeps up with all the latest research and is very thorough. Dr. Suleman has a very academic mind and at times this may come across as stern or impatient, but that is not his heart. Also remember, when we have POTS exacerbations, our brains tend to be a little foggy. Dr. Suleman will do everything he can to help his patients live their best life!! His staff is young but has always been friendly and helpful towards me. I have had no trouble getting my test results printed out to have a copy for myself and for my PCP. I've been coming to the Heartbeat Clinic for over a year and they gave me my life back!! I read these negative reviews and believe these come from patients being overwhelmed. Not every personality will click, but rarely will you find a doctor who wants to treat everyone with this debilitating condition because he truly cares and wants to help. He is older and if he got sick, think how many patients would not receive treatment. That is why he takes many precautions during appointments. I am very grateful for Dr. Amer Suleman.Posted on Google Zach GNovember 25, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr Superman can and will change your life with his excellence in diagnosing and treatment.Posted on Google Amanda FavorsOctober 30, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This is one DR that I can say actually cares about his patients. His staff are always friendly and caring also. I recommend him to anyone that needs a cardiologist. I see him for POTS/syncope. By the way if you are ever in his office look around and see all his research.Google rating score: 3.7 of 5, based on 45 reviews
