SIBO Test

At POTS.net, we offer the SIBO Test to help diagnose Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, a condition where excessive bacteria grow in the small intestine, leading to digestive discomfort and other symptoms. Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment and improved digestive health.

What is SIBO?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when abnormal levels of bacteria populate the small intestine, disrupting normal digestion and nutrient absorption. This can cause symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Purpose of the SIBO Test

The SIBO Test is designed to:

  • Detect excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine
  • Identify the underlying cause of persistent digestive symptoms
  • Guide treatment options including antibiotics, diet changes, and probiotics
  • Monitor treatment effectiveness and symptom improvement

Understanding Your Results

Test results will indicate whether bacterial overgrowth is present and whether hydrogen or methane gases predominate, which helps tailor treatment. Your healthcare provider will review the results with you and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

When is the SIBO Test Recommended?

Your healthcare provider may recommend a SIBO Test if you experience:
  • Chronic bloating or abdominal distension
  • Frequent gas or belching
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Nutritional deficiencies or unexplained weight loss
  • Symptoms related to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or other digestive disorders

How the SIBO Test Works

The most common SIBO Test is the breath test, which involves:

  • Drinking a sugar solution (usually lactulose or glucose)

  • Measuring hydrogen and methane gases in your breath at regular intervals

  • Elevated gas levels indicate bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine

The test is non-invasive, painless, and typically takes 2 to 3 hours.

Preparation and Safety

To ensure accurate results:
  • Follow specific diet restrictions 24 hours before the test (usually a low-fiber, low-fermentation diet)
  • Avoid antibiotics, probiotics, and certain medications as advised by your doctor
  • Fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test
  • Refrain from smoking or exercising during the test period
The SIBO Test is safe and well-tolerated by most patients.
